Class - Secret compartment workshop

  • QLine Design 3 New Boston Road Kingston, NH, 03848 United States (map)

Dear Students,

Designing and building furniture with hidden compartments is both challenging and fun. I incorporate secret spaces into everything that I build, and my clients are constantly stimulating me to come up with new and different ways of doing just that. This class will teach you different ways of integrating hidden compartments into your designs.

We will look at different examples in antique furniture, and explore several modern methods I use in my work. By examining modern and historic techniques, you will have a solid foundation to include secret compartments into any of your work.

In this class, we will build a seemingly simple end table. We will cover material selection, compartment design and layout, tight fitting joinery, adapting existing hardware for unintended uses, fitting and installation of hinges, and make a beautiful, piston fit hand-cut dovetail drawer box. We will be doing a lot of precision hand tool woodworking for extremely tight tolerance hardware and part fitting. By the end of the class, not only will you go home with a beautiful table, but we will push your hand tool and layout skills to the next level, and change the way you look at furniture design and construction.
